Looking for a relaxing staycation where your furry friend is just as welcome as you are?
Gareloch Cottage is the perfect escape! We happily host one small, well-behaved dog, and with a variety of scenic walks right on the doorstep, your pup will be spoilt for choice when it comes to their daily 'walkies'. Whether it's a leisurely stroll along the loch or a more adventurous hike, there's something for every two- and four-legged explorer!
We've made sure Gareloch Cottage offers a warm welcome for your pet too. To help them feel right at home, we provide a few thoughtful doggy essentials for use during your stay—including an extra dog basket, a food and water bowl, and a towel for wiping down muddy paws after those lovely walks.
We do also recommend bringing along your dog's favourite cushion, blankets, or throws to help them settle in with all the familiar comforts of home.

Although the back garden is private and surrounded by shrubbery, we kindly ask that dogs are kept on a lead at all times, as the front entrance isn’t gated. We just want to make sure your pup stays safe while enjoying their holiday too!
To help you and your four-legged friend enjoy your time here, we've gathered some of our favourite dog-friendly spots and suggestions.
Walks right on our doorstep:
Beach walks:
When the tide is out, there’s no better way to start the day than with a brisk walk along the shores of Gareloch, set against a stunning mountain backdrop. The shingle beach is perfect for stretching your legs—and chances are, you’ll bump into a few friendly neighbours out walking their dogs too.

Back Road:
If you're up for a bit of a cardio workout, the steep road just to the right of Gareloch Cottage is a great choice! Follow the road as it winds uphill—on a clear day, you’ll be rewarded with a lovely view across the loch from the top. The route loops back down to Shore Road, passing by AT Hughes Lochside, our local café, before bringing you right back to the cottage.

Rosneath Castle Caravan Park:
Just a short drive from Gareloch Cottage, through Rosneath and past the Shipping Yard, you’ll find a sign for the caravan park. Open to non-residents (with on-site parking available), this is a lovely spot for a walk with your pooch. As you stroll, you’ll be treated to stunning lochside views, stretching all the way across to Helensburgh.

Clynder Woodland and Kilcreggan Circular
Another great local route from our house is around the tip of the Rosneath peninsula with brilliant views across the Argyll hills, Gare Loch and the Firth of Clyde, right down to the Isles of Bute and Arran. Dogs are welcome and may be off-lead in some areas. The best times to visit this trail are April through September.
Hill Walks
Locally there are lots to choose from including Highlandman’s Road, Three Lochs way and Bouie.
Seafront
Just five miles from the house, the centre of Helensburgh boasts a lovely seafront promenade that stretches from the town centre all the way out to Kidston Park

Parks
Run Free Dog Field Cardross
The dog exercise field, located just north of Cardross, is an ideal spot for dogs in Dunbartonshire. Surrounded by trees and offering stunning views across the Clyde, it's a perfect place for your dog to stretch their legs. The field also features a picnic table, poo bags, and bins for your convenience. Just remember to bring your own water to keep your pup refreshed during their playtime!
Visitor Attractions
The Hill House, Helensburgh
Cared for by the National Trust for Scotland, The Hill House is a must-visit for anyone with a passion for design and architecture. This stunning domestic masterpiece by Charles Rennie Mackintosh combines a visually striking mix of Arts & Crafts, Art Nouveau, Scottish Baronial, and Japanese architectural styles. Step inside to experience the grandeur and creativity of Mackintosh’s vision on an impressive scale.
Dogs are allowed on a leash in the Hill House garden and on the roof terrace, but they ask owners to avoid the kitchen garden area.
Geilston Garden
Explore this charming 200-year-old garden nestled along the banks of the River Clyde. In summer, the walled garden bursts into a breathtaking carpet of vibrant colours, offering a peaceful retreat that’s perfect for leisurely strolls and moments of quiet reflection.
Dogs are allowed in all areas except the children’s play area, walled garden and kitchen garden.
Retail
Loch Lomond Shores, Balloch

Nestled on the banks of Loch Lomond, this charming area is the gateway to Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park, surrounded by breathtaking scenery. Many of the local shops are dog-friendly, so you can bring your furry companion along while you browse. However, it's always a good idea to check online in advance to confirm which stores welcome dogs.
